Drink bottle materials: plastic, stainless steel, glass and bamboo

Short answer
Plastic (also bio-based or recycled) is light and affordable, stainless steel is sturdy and insulated in double-walled bottles, and glass is taste-neutral but more fragile. Single-walled stainless steel does not keep drinks warm; for that you need a double-walled, vacuum-insulated bottle. With every material, check the dishwasher: many drink bottles need hand washing.

Plastic: bio-based or recycled

Plastic sports bottles are light and affordable. There are versions based on sugar cane, such as the 95% bioplastic sports bottle that is taste and odour neutral and BPA free, and bottles of rPET: recycled PET. See also how to choose a sports bottle.

Stainless steel: single or double-walled?

A single-walled stainless steel bottle is sturdy and light, but does not insulate. The single-walled bottle with carabiner is, according to its description, only suitable for cold water. A double-walled, vacuum-insulated bottle keeps drinks at temperature; according to its description the Waterdrop bottle keeps drinks fresh for up to 24 hours or warm for up to 12. Recycled stainless steel is available too, sometimes RCS certified for the recycled share.

Glass and bamboo

Glass does not affect taste and comes as a drinking cup or as a double-walled bottle with tea infuser. Bamboo is mostly in caps, lids and outer shells; the bottle or cup itself is stainless steel or glass. More at bamboo bottles and cups.

Dishwasher or hand wash?

Many screw-cap drink bottles are not dishwasher safe, such as the rPET bottle, the stainless steel bottles on this page and the thermos flask with bamboo finish. Each product page says whether it is. If you want customers or staff to put it in the dishwasher without thinking, choose a model where that is explicitly stated.
